Acorn Woodcraft evolved in the early 2000s, born of a love of all things nature and a fascination with messing with wood.
It has grown organically over the years from carving small pieces from timber pilfered from local tree surgeons to now creating a wide range from small gifts for the garden to large sculptures for country parks and private estates using lorry loads of timber sustainably sourced from the Lake District.
SUSTAINABILITY
We are very keen to keep our impact on the environment to a minimum.
Every bit of timber that comes into the yard is used. We grade the timber and any that doesn't make it for carving is logged up for firewood or used to power the biomass boiler, which is used to heat the house, kiln dry the firewood and dry the carvings prior to finishing.
Sawdust and shavings are used as bedding for the chickens and, subsequently, composted for use in the vegetable garden.
An investment in Stihl Battery saws allows most of the work to be carried out in a low impact manner, and batteries are charged using electricity from our array of solar panels (when the sun shines, that is).
We use Stihl Motomix or Aspen fuel in the petrol saws, which is less harmful to the environment than the normal forecourt fuel. Although it is more expensive, we feel it is worth it.
OUR LITTLE WOOD
Over the years, various native trees and shrubs have been planted to create a small woodland on a piece of land.
This has become a haven for wildlife and, with the addition of native wildflowers, is improving every year.
A sculpture trail is planned for the not-too-distant future, so watch this space.
